What is a database?
Databases (international term "database") are a kind of digital card index. Databases manage large amount of structured data on storage media. Individual databases can be linked to each other, allowing faster access to collected information.
In logistics, relational databases are mostly used, linking information from several databases. So that collected information can be retrieved more easily, e.g. which company manufactures which products.
How is a database system structured?
A database consists of two important components:
- The database management system (DBMS) is responsible for managing the database(s).
- The database stores the information in the form of individual records.
Where are databases used?
- Accounting and management programs in controlling and accounting
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
- Merchandise Management Systems (MMS)
- Content Management Systems (CMS)
