Picking warehouse

What is a picking warehouse?

A picking warehouse is a special type of warehouse in logistics. Here, all articles of an assortment are kept ready for picking at the customer's request. It does not matter whether the goods are needed for shipping, manufacturing or production. Unlike other types of storage, the picker must therefore be able to access all stored goods at any time.

How are picking warehouses operated?

Picking warehouses can be operated using different picking methods. The most used ones are:

The sequence of an order in a picking warehouse

As soon as a customer's order is received by a picking warehouse, the picker begins his work. Using one of the picking methods, all the items specified in the order are then taken from the warehouse and combined into individual packaging units in the desired division and quantity. If stocks of individual goods are nearing their end, they are directly replenished with partial quantities from another warehouse or from production.
