What are the tasks of logistics?

The tasks of logistics include all activities related to the planning, controlling, execution, and monitoring of the flow of goods, information, and people. In general, logistics is divided into intralogistics and extralogistics, although the term extralogistics is not officially established. Instead, the entire external logistics sector is typically referred to as distribution logistics, transport logistics, or simply external logistics.
Intralogistics, on the other hand, focuses on internal material flows within a company and is a key factor in a company’s efficiency and competitiveness.

Broadly speaking, the core tasks of logistics can be divided into five main areas: procurement logistics, production logistics, distribution logistics, disposal logistics, and information logistics:

• Procurement Logistics
  (Planning and organizing the procurement of materials, selecting and evaluating suppliers, inventory management, and warehouse planning)

• Production Logistics
  (Controlling the flow of materials and goods within production, ensuring material availability, optimizing production processes to reduce lead times)

• Distribution Logistics
  (Planning and executing the transportation of goods to customers, warehousing and order picking, organizing shipping and delivery)

• Disposal Logistics
  (Returning waste, packaging, or surplus materials, recycling and environmentally responsible disposal, optimizing return processes)

• Information Logistics
  (Collecting, processing, and distributing logistics data, using IT systems to monitor and control logistics processes, analyzing and evaluating logistics KPIs)
