A freight forwarder is a service company that arranges the shipment of goods to specific destinations. There are national forwarding companies that transport freight by truck within Germany or to neighboring countries. But there are also numerous international forwarding companies that transport freight across continents using means of transportation such as ships, aircraft and rail.
In Germany, freight forwarders usually work according to the German Freight Forwarders' Standard Terms and Conditions. The services of the freight forwarders, as well as their rights and obligations, are precisely defined in these regulations. For some years now, however, the trend has been for freight forwarders to increasingly act as service providers in the logistics sector.
