What does transshipment mean in logistics?
Cargo handling is one of the three main processes in logistics. It describes a process in which the goods change the means of transport during shipment, such as from a ship to a train. In this example, the containers are loaded from the ship onto a train or a truck with the help of a crane and thus transported to the hinterland. A transshipment can take place at several and different points in the transport chain and means more costs for the company that ships the goods. Handling can also be performed within the plant, such as when goods are loaded from the assembly line onto a forklift.
There are three ways to perform the envelope:
- Manual
- Machine
- Automatic
