What does transshipment mean in logistics?

Handling is one of the three main processes in logistics. It describes a process in which the goods change the means of transportation during shipping, e.g. from a ship to a train. In this example, the containers are loaded from the ship onto a train or truck with the help of a crane and transported to the hinterland. A transshipment can take place at several different points in the transport chain and means more costs for the company shipping the goods. Handling can also be carried out within the company, e.g. when goods are loaded from the conveyor belt onto a forklift truck.

There are three ways to carry out the transshipment:

  • Manual
  • Mechanical
  • Automatic
