What is freight?
Freight, also known as cargo, is a load to be transported, often by ship or airplane. The freight is transported by a carrier for a fee. Freight is the fee for the transportation of cargo.
Typical means of transportation for freight are:
- Freight trains
- Cargo ships
- Cargo aircraft
- Trucks
The sender is responsible for loading the freight. Gem. According to § 412 HGB, the sender is responsible for safe loading of the freight, whereas the carrier is responsible for safe loading (e.g. compliance with the permissible axle loads, weight distribution) as well as for securing the load.
