Cargo

What is a cargo?

Freight, also called cargo in English, is a cargo to be transported, often by ship or airplane. The cargo is transported by a carrier against payment. Freight then refers to the payment for the transportation of cargo.

Typical means of transportation of cargo are:

  • Freight trains
  • Cargo ships
  • Cargo aircraft
  • Truck

The shipper is responsible for loading the cargo. Gem. According to § 412 of the German Commercial Code (HGB), the shipper is responsible for the safe loading of the cargo, whereas the carrier is responsible for the safe loading (e.g. compliance with the permissible axle loads, weight distribution) as well as for securing the cargo.
