Multi-client capability: more than a customer field in the record

WMS products designed for in-house warehouses typically assume a single stock owner. That is not enough for a logistics service provider. What is required is unlimited client and sub-client capability, keeping every principal – and their own customers – securely separated. Solutions for Logistics Service Providers and 3PL Providers

Separated inventory management: goods movements, storage locations and ownership are unambiguously assigned to one client.

Client-specific process control: goods receipt checks, picking strategies or shipping rules can differ per principal.

Independent configuration: the provider sets up new clients, reports, storage locations and shelves itself – no development ticket with the vendor.

Flexible licensing: seasonal and order peaks are covered without permanently paying for worst-case capacity.

2. Recording value added services digitally instead of estimating them later

For many contract logistics providers, value added services are the most profitable part of the business: display building, steam pressing, kitting, set assembly and labelling. To invoice these services in full, they have to exist in the system as a process of their own – via an integrated production module or as value added services (VAS) with digital confirmation and documentation.

The practical effect: every service performed carries a timestamp, quantity and client, and flows into billing without an intermediate step.

3. Client-specific billing: the real differentiator

A genuine multi-client WMS includes an integrated billing module that records all stock movements and services per client and prepares them for the ERP or accounting system. Three capabilities matter most:

Daily reconciliation of movement data – discrepancies surface immediately rather than at month-end.

Simulation of different rate models – pricing can be tested against real movement data before a quote goes out.

Workforce controlling – integrable performance measurement as the basis for project costing and SLA evidence.

4. Interfaces: per client, running in parallel

Every principal brings its own systems. A WMS for logistics service providers therefore needs standardised interfaces to ERP, shop, transport and customer systems – plus the ability to run separate connections to different clients’ systems in parallel without conflict. Also relevant: yard management, SSCC/NVE receipt and direct integration of automated small parts warehouses, for example via the pLG AutoStore Connector, which removes the need for a subordinate sub-WMS.

5. Fulfilment and e-commerce as the default case

B2C volume has long been standard business for 3PL providers. That calls for webshop integration for placing B2C customer orders directly, multi-order picking, and returns management that makes returned goods available again per client.

Selection checklist

Are multi-client capability and billing included natively or sold as paid add-ons?

Can clients, reports and warehouse structures be created without the vendor?

Can several ERP, shop and transport connections run at the same time?

Are value added services managed as a documented process of their own?

Does the licensing model cover order peaks?

Is the system audited by an independent body – for example annually by Fraunhofer IML?

Frequently asked questions

What does multi-client capability mean in a WMS?

Multi-client capability means a WMS manages several principals in parallel within one installation – with separated stock, user rights, processes and reports. Sub-client capability extends this to the principal’s own customers.

Why isn’t a standard WMS enough for logistics service providers?

Standard systems are built around a single stock owner. They usually lack per-client billing, parallel interfaces per principal, and the ability to model value added services as a standalone process.

Which value added services can a WMS handle?

Typical examples are display building, steam pressing, kitting, set assembly and labelling. They are managed via an integrated production module or as VAS, confirmed digitally and documented – which makes them billable.

How does client-specific billing work in a WMS?

An integrated billing module records all stock movements and services per client, prepares them for ERP or accounting, and enables daily reconciliation of movement data as well as the simulation of different rate models.

How are different customer systems connected?

Through standardised interfaces to ERP, shop, transport and customer systems.
